Every scale
tells a story.

Surrendered bearded dragons, ball pythons, and red-eared sliders โ€” waiting for hands gentle enough to hold them again. This is where cold-blooded meets warm-hearted.

Adoption Process

Three steps.
One lifetime.

We designed this process to feel like a conversation, not an application. Most adoptions complete within two weeks.

01
Step 1

Browse & Connect

Find your match

Person browsing reptile profiles on a tablet, sitting in a warm-lit room

Explore our full gallery of adoption-ready reptiles. Each profile includes temperament notes, care requirements, and a detailed rescue history. When one catches your eye โ€” and one will โ€” fill out our brief interest form. No commitment yet, just a conversation.

Takes about 5 minutes. We read every form personally.

02
Step 2

Meet & Learn

A visit, not a test

Volunteer holding a bearded dragon during an adoption meet, smiling

We schedule a visit โ€” in person or virtual โ€” where you meet your potential animal and chat with our care team. We'll walk through their specific needs, show you what their setup looks like, and answer every question including the ones you think are silly. There are no silly questions here.

We match you with an experienced keeper for the call.

03
Step 3

Welcome Home

The beginning

Happy family welcoming a red-eared slider turtle to its new home setup

Once approved, we prepare a transition kit: the animal's current substrate blend, their preferred hides, a feeding log, and our personal number for the first two weeks. You're not adopting alone. We stay in touch for as long as you want us to.

Post-adoption support for the lifetime of your animal.

Adopter Stories

The unexpected

Every one of these people said they weren't a reptile person.

Paprika the bearded dragon sitting on Daniela's arm, both looking at the camera
Adopted: Paprika (Bearded Dragon)
โ€œI told myself I wasn't a reptile person. Paprika proved me wrong in about four minutes. She waved at me and that was it. The team at Scales walked me through everything โ€” setup, feeding, vet contacts. I never felt alone.โ€
Marcus Webb, a Black man in his 40s, smiling with his children in background

Vesper the ball python coiled gently around Marcus's forearm
Adopted: Vesper (Ball Python)
โ€œMy kids thought snakes were scary. Now they fight over who gets to hold Vesper first. Scales matched us with a python whose temperament was genuinely perfect for a busy household. The post-adoption check-ins meant everything.โ€
Priya Nair, a South Asian woman in her late 20s, laughing, outdoors

Mango the leopard gecko sitting on Priya's outstretched palm, looking curious
Adopted: Mango (Leopard Gecko)
โ€œI inherited an iguana from my aunt and had no idea what I was doing. Scales didn't just help me find Mango โ€” they helped me understand the iguana too. Two rescues, one very patient team.โ€
Tom and Ellie Okafor, a Nigerian-British couple, smiling together with their daughter

Cypress the red-eared slider swimming in his new 75-gallon tank setup
Adopted: Cypress (Red-Eared Slider)
โ€œOur 10-year-old had been asking for a reptile for two years. Cypress was the answer. He's teaching her patience in a way nothing else has. Watching them together is the best thing that's happened to our house.โ€
Jordan Kim, a Korean-American person in their 20s, holding a camera, smiling

Fern the crested gecko perched on Jordan's shoulder, looking directly at camera
Adopted: Fern (Crested Gecko)
โ€œI'm a photographer and Fern has ruined me. I take more photos of her than any client. The whole adoption experience was warm and personal โ€” felt like adopting from a friend, not an organization.โ€
